Our Story

The Onural group is a collection of culinary based enterprises by Chef and Owner Engin Onural.

Chef Engin was born in New York and raised in Ankara, Turkey which gave him a global perspective from an early age. He is heavily influenced by Scandinavian design, Turkish hospitality, and Japanese cuisine and weaves these influences throughout everything he does.

Chef Engin began his career as a Stage where he learned the craft of making sushi. From there, he built and opened his first restaurant The Venue on El Paseo in Palm Desert, CA in 2011.

In 2018, he opened his second restaurant Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey in Palm Springs, CA which became an instant hit landing at the top of all of the “must eat” lists.

In 2021 Chef Engin expanded into nightlife opening the speakeasy-style cocktail bar Tailor Shop in the Uptown Design District of Palm Springs. It is a secret among locals that on nights that you can’t get a table at Sandfish, you can always get a few signature dishes at Tailor Shop.

In 2022, Chef Engin expanded the Sandfish brand cross the desert and over state lines to Phoenix, AZ. While each Onural Group property has its own signature style, the common thread throughout is a commitment to quality, service and community.

Press

While standard nigiri and makis are on Sandfish’s menu, it’s the original, positively pretty creations – the best-selling Venue Roll, for example, caps a spicy tuna roll with seared salmon, spicy mayo, teriyaki sauce, and micro greens – that take top billing here.
